Fragmented student efforts become coordinated, high-leverage systems.
The Real World AI Network is a student program of the Societal Computing and Innovation Lab at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, hosted by the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego. It turns UCSD's scattered student AI activity into one coordinated ecosystem spanning research, industry, and entrepreneurship.
Student AI talent at UC San Diego is everywhere and connected to nothing. RAIN exists to consolidate it: one operating layer linking student organizations, faculty, industry, and founders so ideas move from research to product to venture without falling through the cracks.
Fragmented student efforts become coordinated, high-leverage systems.
Faculty mentorship, compute, and capital behind real world AI work.
A durable pipeline from undergraduate exploration to venture-backed startups.
Each pillar is necessary but not sufficient on its own. Together they form a self-reinforcing flywheel.
A federation of student-led labs, project teams, hackathon groups, and consulting orgs. The talent engine, and the unified interface to faculty and industry.
Faculty aligned under a shared student AI initiative, providing research direction, credibility, and access to labs, datasets, and grants.
Partnerships with leading AI companies: compute, funding, datasets, applied problems, and direct recruiting pipelines.
A venture pipeline for student-founded AI startups: IP frameworks, founder development, mentorship, and funding access.
Each pair of pillars unlocks a different surface of value. RAIN's programs are designed to live precisely there.
Faculty-led project tracks, technical seminars, research showcases, and cross-department capstone projects and theses.
Large-scale compute and funding partnerships, plus individual mentoring inside faculty-led research initiatives.
Sponsored challenges, consulting pipelines, talent shortlists, and direct recruiting channels into top AI roles.
The RAIN Fellowship, an internal incubator pipeline, demo days, and direct investor access for student-led ventures.
An executive board runs the program day to day; the WISDOM advisory board keeps it accountable and connected.
Sets strategic direction, oversees all pillars, and represents RAIN to the university and external partners.
Runs internal operations and execution, coordinates across divisions, and manages the partner organization board.
Owns research alignment and technical initiatives, interfaces with faculty and labs, and maintains project quality.
Leads corporate partnerships, manages sponsor relationships, and oversees recruiting pipelines.
Leads incubator and startup programs, manages investor relationships, and oversees IP frameworks and founder support.
